The reason I wanted to start this entry, was a discussion was sparked, on another blog, regarding these forms of understanding the physical and metaphysical Universe of which we are a part.
Regardless of how one believes or sees that Universe, we are all attempting to understand it (science and religion) and ourselves (science and the divine). Turning within to discover who we are, what the Divine is and how the Universe effects us is metaphysical, or religious/spiritual. Looking to others (psychologists, doctors, scientists, etc.) is physical and to be proven and made scientific by hypothesis/theory, testing, and thereby proving or disproving such as fact.
Divination:
The art or practice that seeks to foresee or foretell future events or discover hidden knowledge usually by the interpretation of omens or by the aid of supernatural powers
Magick:
The use or means (as charms or spells) believed to have supernatural power over natural forces through magickal rites or incantations, candles, oils, herbs, etc.
Science:
knowledge or a system of knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws especially as obtained and tested through scientific methods. Such knowledge or such a system of knowledge concerned with the physical world and its phenomena
Metaphysical:
Of or relating to the transcendent or to a reality beyond what is perceptible to the senses
My belief is that there are no absolutes. Why? Because the only thing that is constant is change. Even if one believes in evolution, the Big Bang, God (Christian) or many gods, it matters not to the Universe, because it changes, albiet very slowly, so what we know now, does not apply to what those (or us if you believe in re-incarnation) 1000 years from now or more will know or believe.
Coming in close to the understanding of magick (from a scientific point of view) would be Quantum Physics. Quantum Physics talks about the matter of our Universe that is filled with quantum probabilities and organized chaos. What you may think or wish (metaphysics) influences those particles. The art of magick, formed in sacred space and in the mind as visualization(metaphysics) in this plane with tools, candles and herbs(science/physics), sent to the spiritual plane (metaphysics) and forms there as a “real” item, which eventually manifests physically here in our plane (as above, so below).
With divination tools, runes, tarot, scrying, etc., one can tap into the spiritual plane (metaphysics) with physical objects as the doorway (physical/science). Although you can use tarot and runes in magick, in its essence, they are for learning, gaining insight and assisting one’s life through guidance (metaphysical).
Magick, is to change one’s environment (physical) through the use of magickal means - spells, charms, candles, chants (metaphysical). By environment I mean yourself, the life around you and sometimes, other beings (unfortunately), regardless of any inspiration or guidelinss from divination.
With other forms of divination, such as astrology or numerology (metaphysical), you now have the blueprint to understand what lies ahead for you and your path (physical). Does this mean that is the only way things will be for you? Using the excuse that “hey my sign is this, oh well, I am –insert excuse here–”. Nope. Quite the opposite. If you knew ahead of time that you were going to have cancer, or diabetes because your parents have it, does this mean there is nothing you can do? No, with this knowledge, you take steps to ensure you don’t get it, or at the very least, prevent it becoming life threatening. Some choose not too, so the likelihood of something happening is higher.
Taking the Christian viewpoint as an example. Many of them believe that astrology, divination, and such are evil. Yet, they use a form of divination in prayer by asking God for help and guidance. Whether or not you believe in it, bad or good, science or not, it is still there. If, through astronomy - the study of objects and matter outside the earth’s atmosphere and of their physical and chemical properties - you are born under a scientific fact that a certain alignment of planets and constellations happens every year, you are still considered born under those aspects. Does this make you that astrological sign? Yes and no. Scientifically, those heavenly bodies are there. Astrologically, they are there too, but many people do not follow or believe in the astrological influences. Science has shown that the Moon, Sun and other celestial bodies do have influence over each other and us.
One person’s experience is just as valid as another’s and shouldn’t be judged as wrong or evil. It just is. How you live your life is up to you. If you were supposed to turn left and you turned right, with full knowledge or not that it is a mistake and could lead to disaster, it is still a choice. With various forms of guidance, that choice can be better decided, no matter what your belief is. If a scientist said never go right or your astrology chart said never go right and you do, then that is still a choice with previous guidance.
So what are your thoughts? Do you believe in magick? Science? Divination. Or is it all BS or evil? I say this as a learning experience, not to judge, not to damn. Just wanting to open some dialog regarding this and learn more. Thanks in advance for your input!
By the way, these viewpoints are from my understanding after reading, learning, experiencing and, some science. It is not the end all to beat all, I don’t profess to know everything there is about the Universe…I just wish I did sometimes! LOL
